Rock Art on the River Vyg and Hunting

Archaeologist Liliana Janik from the University of Cambridge will talk about rock art on the islands of the River Vyg, which flows into the White Sea; she will also discuss what the carvings tell us about ancient methods of hunting beluga whales and elks. About 5,000–3,000 years ago, stone-age hunter-gatherers cut almost 2,300 rock carvings on the faces of the cliffs of the islands. The lecture is open for everyone and will take place at Siida Auditorium. The lecture is interpreted into Finnish. The event is arranged by the Sámi Museum Siida/Sámi Cultural Environment Unit. Welcome – whether you are interested in archaeology, art or hunting!
