Non-invasive genetic sampling methods, the count of animals in an area with the help of the DNA contained in feces, hair and other biological material, has revolutionized the way wildlife animals can and are monitored.

For over ten years NIBIO Svanhovd has been working with these methods to count and investigate bear populations across northern Europa and northwestern Russia. But the results of monitoring are not only of use to simply count the number of bears, they are very valuable for the management and research of animals – locally as well as on larger scales.
