The latest temporary exhibition of the Sámi Museum Siida, A Fighting Spirit, presents the audience with Sámi protest art. Art is a means of being in contact with and taking a stand on what is going on.

Suohpanterror is a group of Sámi artists who want to stay anonymous. Based in the Land of the Sámi – or Sápmi – the group uses art to take a stand on topical issues concerning their area. The Sámi Museum Siida’s summer exhibition is comprised of posters created by Suohpanterror; in these posters, the group makes use of the imagery and vocabulary of pop art and Wester popular culture.

The exhibition is produced by Márkomeannu -festival.

Hello, sister, hello, brother!

The land is our mother, the land is the beginning and the end. Our case deals with land, and the land is the answer. We’ve all been made from dust, and neither we nor our spirit, culture or language will live without land. If we have no land, the future generations will not have a future.

Our survival as an indigenous people obligates all of us. Let’s protect the lands; land is life. Let’s guard the waters; water is life. Let’s take care of the land, and it will take care of us. We have to work for our future, because if we don’t, who will? We all have something to give; we all have the responsibility and strength to protect, care for, respect and guard the land. Let’s change things, because we are the change. We will not give in; we choose to live and not die.
