Across the Unbroken Snow – The Snowmobile for 50 years in Finland

Life in the wilds of Lapland changed radically in the early 1960s, when the snowmobile Ski-Doo, which had been launched in North-America in 1959, was introduced into Finland. This technical device influenced both the natural environment and humans in many ways. The nature of Lapland’s wilds changed, as even the most distant corners of the wilderness could now be reached easily and fast. Unfortunately, this also meant breaking the silence of the wilderness. The greatest change, however, concerned people and their everyday lives. Now, the father of the family came home for the night, instead of staying for weeks in the woods. The exhibition Across the Unbroken Snow looks at the 50-year history of the snowmobile in Finland and the changes that its introduction brought about in people’s daily lives.
