The exhibition An Expedition to the Green Belt deals with the green belt of Fennoscandia, that is, the pearl string of conservation areas near the frontiers between Norway, Russia and Finland. The border area fascinates by its diverse nature: the natural features, culture and geology of the region take you on an interesting expedition to the destinations of Fennoscandia.

The exhibition deals with the rich bird waters of Norway, the strong Russian tradition of nature education and study, and the splendid Finnish hiking destinations – without forgetting Sámi cultural heritage and the sparkle of minerals. The beautiful photographs and drawings of the exhibition conjure up the change of seasons and the spectrum of wildlife and sceneries. In the background, you hear nature sounds from the Arctic and the music of the Sámi, the only indigenous people of Europe.

Norway, Russia and Finland have cooperated in the field of conservation ever since the 1990s. The ABCGheritage project (Arctic Biological, Cultural and Geological Heritage) run by the Natural Heritage Services of Metsähallitus is part of this close cooperation. The project is aimed at building closer cooperation between the neighbouring countries and, at the same time, passing down knowledge to future generations. In addition to Metsähallitus’s Natural Heritage Services, the project has partners from Finland, Norway and Russia. It is funded by the EU neighbourhood programme ENPI Kolarctic.

The exhibition is open for the public at the Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida until 25 January 2015.
