An exhibition by the northernmost camera club in the EU – Pohjois-Lapin kameraseura –takes us to the borderline of light and shade: to the black-and-white, discreet world of photography. The exhibition displays shots of the magnificent nature and the people of the Arctic and their different seasons, taken by amateur photographers who live or spend time in Northern Lapland.

As the name of the club tells (“Northern Lapland Camera Club"), the club consists of a group of amateur photographers in Northern Lapland. It was founded in 2011, when a number of photography enthusiasts living in the northernmost Lapland started to meet regularly with a focus on their hobby. At present, the club has approximately 90 members, and the exhibition that is displayed in Siida, Inari, by the Northern Lapland Nature Centre of Metsähallitus is the second official exhibition of the camera club.

My Black-and-White World is a collection of photos taken by the members of the club. Altogether 26 shots from 20 photographers are displayed. The exhibition is a result of a competition the club arranged for its members last autumn on the theme of black-and-white photography. During the competition, the idea of setting up an exhibition arose, and the exhibition also displays shots from the competition.

Northern Lapland abounds in objects and themes that inspire a photographer: extreme natural phenomena such as the nightless night and the dark period of the winter but also the unique natural environments and traditional multiculturalism provide countless themes to be saved on screens. In the exhibition, members of the Northern Lapland Camera Club introduce us to their black-and-white shots on nature and people, playing with light and shade.

In addition to competitions, the camera club arranges a number of other activities for its members. Several photography courses of various levels are held every year. In addition, the club organises photographing excursions during which theoretical skills are put into practice and new skills acquired. Usually, the excursions are made to natural environments, which are indeed a unique theme for photographing in Northern Lapland, the range of the club. In addition to outdoor photographing, the club has now launched activities in a new field by acquiring studio facilities in the village of Inari. There, the members of the club have equipment for studio photography at their disposal, and the facilities are also rented for outsiders.

My Black-and-White World has been arranged by Metsähallitus’s Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida, and it is open for the public until the beginning of June.
