Tea Karvinen, a freelance nature photographer who moved from Helsinki to Kuusamo in the summer of 2011, switched from news photographing to nature photography in 2009. Being a former wilderness guide, she found it easy to return to nature. The camera has guided Karvinen – who has studied photojournalism – all around the world, but she has also photographed the national parks of Finland a great deal.

Through her pictures, Tea Karvinen aims to make people want to return to nature:  “Our generation has lost touch with nature. I want to encourage people to go outdoors and experience nature both in Finland and abroad. Our planet is an incredibly beautiful place. For me, there is no distinction between humans and nature. People can get a lot of energy by spending time in the midst of forests, mountains, the sea and other natural surroundings.  Knowledge enhances understanding, which enhances respect for nature. It, again, strengthens our desire to protect this valuable home of ours.

At the moment, Karvinen prefers to photograph in the Finnish Lapland. In addition to the national parks of Finland, her present photograph projects include reindeer husbandry and reindeer herders, the Sámi and, abroad, the Arctic.
