An exhibition called ReindeerFashion, which is arranged by the Reindeer into Vogue project of the Sámi Education Institute SAKK and the Sámi Museum, is opened at Siida on May 18, the International Museum Day. To follow the example of the fashion world, this special exhibition is set up as a shopping street. The fashion street is dedicated to the Reindeer, and it displays innovative design that is based on a variety of reindeer raw materials.

The traditional Sámi clothing has been made from reindeer raw materials such as skin, hide, antler, bone and even tendons that were used as thread. Today, these materials are often wasted. The purpose of the project Reindeer into Vogue is to increase the use of reindeer materials and make these materials better known. On the fashion street of the ReindeerFashion exhibition, the status of reindeer products rises, symbolically, to the same level with the most desired brands in the world.

The ReindeerFashion exhibition displays a selection of the products that were created for the design competition and in the workshops of the project "Reindeer into Vogue". The aim of the design competition ReindeerIN! was to encourage people to develop new products from reindeer raw materials and to make these materials better known among the designers and planners of Southern Finland, too. From among the 47 entries to the competition, two works were chosen as the winners: the jewellery collection Skađi that was designed and made by Katja Lettinen from silver and the leg bone of the reindeer, and the lockback knife that was designed and made by Pekka Tuominen from steel and reindeer antler. These and many other innovative products are displayed at the ReindeerFashion exhibition at Siida. The exhibition is open for the public through the summer, until September 19.

The project Reindeer into Vogue is a trade development project run by the Sámi Education Institute SAKK, which has been funded by Lapland’s Employment and Economic Centre from the funding quota of the Northernmost Lapland Leader. Part of the funding comes from the EU.The project began on July 1, 2008 and lasts till November 30, 2010. The exhibition ReindeerFashion has been arranged by the Reindeer into Vogue project and the Sámi Museum Siida.
