The Blue Moment

Martti Rikkonen, a nature photographer from Inari, is not depressed by the long, dark winter. The cycle of seasons is, rather, a source of richness, as the dark period, the cold spells, the moonlight and the aurora borealis, as well as the first rays of the sun after the polar night, provide more than enough challenges for a photographer wanting to record them. When spring advances, the amount of light increases exponentially, and, finally, the blue moment only occurs when capercaillies dance their mating dance by the photographer’s hide.

The photography exhibition of Martti Rikkonen is a story about winter in Northern Lapland. In his photographs, we meet natural phenomena, sceneries and some of the few animals wintering in the area. Winter doesn’t make the life of a photographer easy but may sometimes give a generous reward. But you have to be awake all the time, as the blue moment can be really short, even shorter than the time it takes to dig out the camera from its bag.
