Ijahis Idja Indigenous Music Festival

Aug 01, 2017 12:42 PM

The Sámi Museum Siida will arrange a music seminar as part of the indigenous music event Ijahis Idja. The seminar will focus on the role of traditional Sámi music in the modern music world. It will be held 19.8.2017 at 12.00 in the Siida Auditorium, with free entrance for everyone.

This year, the indigenous music festival Ijahis Idja is arranged for the 14th time. The focus of the event will be on the dialects of yoiking. With this theme, the organisers want to spotlight the rich spectrum of Sámi vocal music genres. This year is the centenary of the first pan-Nordic meeting of the Sámi, so the music world that crosses national borders is also a very topical theme.

At Ijahis Idja, Saturday begins with the music seminar “Juoigansuopmanat” (“The Dialects of Yoiking”) at the Sámi Museum Siida. In their presentations, the speakers will reflect on the role of Sámi music in the modern world of music. Among those presenting their views will be the Swedish Sámi yoiker Simon Issát Maraisen from the band ÁRA.  ÁRA will be performing for the first time in Finland and at the Ijahis idja festival. The unique sound of the band is a combination of tradition, inspiration, yoiking and improvisation. Marja Mortensson is a young Norwegian Sámi yoiker and singer. In her music, she highlights the importance of nature, her love for reindeer herding and her passion for protecting the South Sámi language. The Inari Sámi Anna Morottaja and the Skolt Sámi Hanna-Maaria Kiprianoff will bring local colour to the seminar.

Ijahis Idja is arranged jointly by Sámi organisations that are based in Inari. The organisers are the association Anára Sámisearvi ry, the Sámi Parliament, the Sámi Education Institute, the municipality of Inari, the Sámi Museum Siida, the Arts Promotion Centre/Regional Office of Lapland, Yle Sápmi and Hotel Kultahovi.
