Autumn Day at Skolt Sámi Heritage House in Sevettijärvi on 11 September 2015

Sep 03, 2015 02:00 PM

The Skolt Sámi Cultural Week will be launched in Sevettijärvi on Friday, 11 September, when the Sámi Museum Siida and the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation arrange programme for a whole autumn day together with the pupils of the Sevettijärvi school. The programme starts at the Heritage House at 11 a.m. and goes on most of the afternoon.

On the Autumn Day, a great deal happens at the Heritage House. Bread is baked in the open-air oven, and the pupils of the Sevettijärvi school arrange a flea market and run a cafeteria. The Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation will provide opportunity for crafting a shoe band and plaiting a braid by hand. A traditional turf roof will also be built by volunteers for the fish cellar by the Heritage House. In addition, guests will be able to try the new traditional boat – a boat with root seams – on the pond near the Heritage House.

The programme starts at 11 a.m. and goes on most of the afternoon. The staff of the Cultural Environment Unit of the Sámi Museum Siida will attend the event, with researcher Päivi Magga and archeologist Eija Ojanlatva telling about the activities of the unit.

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House will be open all day, from 10 a.m. to 18 p.m.
