Oct 07, 2014 08:53 AM

The new temporary exhibition of the Sámi Museum Siida, Images of Water – An Inari Sámi Mindscape in the Photograph, is open for the public in Inari from 10 October 2014 to 8 February 2015. In the impressive photography exhibition of Jan-Eerik Paadar, the Inari Sámi mindscape manifests itself to its interpreter above all through water: as brooks, rivers and lakes. Dark landscapes breathe the drama of the seasons. Open sceneries are given a rhythm by small details.

Jan-Eerik Paadar’s trip as a photographer began in the early 2000s, and, year by year, his fascination for the hobby has grown stronger. Studies in the audio-visual field and work took him to Southern Finland for a few years. As the family grew, it felt natural for him to return to Inari and to make sure that his own children, too, could have a close relationship to nature and grow in the midst of a living Sámi culture.

Jan-Eerik’s values are strongly reflected in his photography. He has an innate gift of seeing the beauty of the object and being able to convey it to the viewer through his photography. Being a technically skilled photographer, Jan-Eerik can tell stories by means of images, and his points of view are always fresh. His way of recording life through the lense shows that he has high regard for his roots and his late great-uncle Matti Paadar, or Lusman Matti.

“One does not need to travel far to tell a story that will interest those listening to it.”

Jan-Eerik tries never to forget these wise words of Matti Paadar while recording life in his photography. In addition to great photographs, the exhibition enables us to look at the everyday life of a photographer; it also makes us familiar with stories told by Matti Paadar. The elegant multi-layer sound world of the exhibition has been created by Mikkâl Morottaja.

This exhibition is a real, touching experience!

Siida is open from Tuesday till Sunday 10 a.m till 5 p.m.
