Maintenance and preservation of old objects Event at Sámi Museum Siida

May 17, 2011 01:59 PM

Would you like to know how to preserve old objects? How to maintain and keep silver artifacts? Are aluminium and salt a solution to silver jewelry that has turned dark, or should jewelry be kept in the freezer? How should silk scarfs be packed up? What is the right way to treat and preserve wooden objects? What should be done to old reindeerskin sho

You will get an answer to these questions at Siida on the International Museum Day, on 18 May 2011. The staff of the museum will show, with the help of artifacts from the museum collections, how to maintain and preserve textiles and wooden and silver objects.

The focus of the day will be on discussion and exchange of information. During the day, we want to introduce the public to the museum collections and their maintenance. The audience will also learn about the special skills of the museum, that is, conservation and the technical treatment and the maintenance of artifacts. This is useful information for those who have old, valuable objects that they want to keep in good condition. Therefore, the museum wants to provide information on how objects, especially old and problematic ones, can be kept at home in a safe way.

The target groups of the day include craftspeople who make duodji, or Sámi handicraft, as well as duodji enthusiasts and students (from the Sámi Education Institute), but the day is also meant for anyone who is interested in Sámi heritage and objects, or old objects in general.

Before noon on 18 May 2011, the program is meant for the students of the Sámi Education Institute, and, in the evening, from 6 p.m. on, we have a public event. The languages of the evening occasion will be Finnish and North Sámi.

Come to see, experience and discuss!

Siida has an open house on the International Museum Day, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
