Museum Card Grants Entry to Siida

In the Nordic countries, the Finnish Museums Association is the first association to launch a general museum card. The Museum Card gives entry to 200 museums in Finland, and the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida is one of the museums participating in this cooperation on the Card.

The Museum Card is a general ticket to Finnish museums and is valid for a year from the date of first use. Already in May, the 54-euro Museum Card is valid in almost 200 museum units all around Finland. From 5 May on, the Card can be bought in all the museums engaged in the system, and at the on-line shop at museot.fi.

At Siida in Inari, the staff is excited about the Museum Card.

– I’m sure that both local people and tourists will make use of this Card, says Minna Väisänen, Sámi Museum’s Customer Service Supervisor. – For example those living in the area can buy the Card before their vacation in the south, and make use of the opportunities the Museum Card provides for them in Southern Finland and its museums. The Card grants entry to museums all around Finland, and a detailed list of the museums is available on the website www.museot.fi.

In the municipality of Inari, the Museum Card can be bought at Siida and at the Skolt Sámi Heritage House in Sevettijärvi. The Heritage House – which is open for the whole summer – can be visited for free, but the Sámi Museum wants to give the guests the opportunity of getting a Museum Card at the House.

– The Skolt Sámi Heritage House is an excellent destination in this small village close to the border of Norway. Through this national network, the Museum Card can bring visibility not just to Siida but also to the Heritage House, Väisänen says.

A similar general ticket to museums has been used in Holland. With the help of the Museum Card, the Finnish Museums Association aims at increasing visits to museums, as Finns visit museums much more seldom than the citizens of the other Nordic countries. The idea of the Museum Card is to help people visit museums more spontaneously so that the price of the ticket is not a decisive factor when considering a visit to a museum.

The sale of the Museum Card starts at Siida and the other places where it is sold on 5 May 2015. Siida will switch to summer opening ours on 1 June. The summer opening hours both for Siida and Restaurant Sarrit are every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. In the summer, the public can also visit Siida’s unique Open-Air Museum. The summer season lasts until 19 September.
