Siida Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary Year

Jan 15, 2018 11:05 AM

The Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida in Inari will soon have its 20th anniver-sary (1998–2018). A great reason for celebration! Siida’s operations have grown and become more varied, and visitor numbers have multiplied compared to the early estimates. The number of employ-ees has also doubled since the first years. The anniversary year will show in many ways in Siida’s activities. Siida will celebrate its 20-year existence by having an open house on 27 March 2018.

On the history of Siida

Siida’s history began with the Open-Air Museum when the Inari Sámi Museum launched its activities as early as the 1960s. The thought of building a museum that would fulfill the demands of a modern museum arose at the beginning of the 1980s. Metsähallitus was also planning a nature centre in the Lemmenjoki area.

In 1987, a Sámi Museum working group was founded in order to draw a start-up plan for a building project of a combined Sámi Museum and Nature Centre. The actual construction planning of the new building began in 1992; the initial manuscript for the basic exhibition was also drawn the same year.

The depression of the 1990s slowed down the planning of the building project, but the Exhibition Working Group actively continued planning the content of the exhibitions. In the course of several years of planning, the exhibition scriptwriters created a strong basis for the exhibitions – exhibitions that have lasted well through the years. Siida’s building project was granted EU funding in 1995 and the house was completed in 1998, which marked the beginning of the joint journey of the Sámi Museum and the Northern Lapland Nature Centre in the form of Siida.

Celebrating the anniversary year

The public will notice the anniversary year in Siida both in the production of events, at Siida Shop and in the exhibitions.

On the anniversary day, 27 March 2018, two exhibitions will be launched. The photo show Siida’s 20 Years will introduce the audience to Siida’s diverse activities. The other anniversary exhibition tells about the long career of Johan Nuorgam, the front figure of the association Sámi Litto, which founded the Sámi Museum. The exhibition focuses on the rare set of artefacts collected by Nuorgam in the 1930s – a collection which is, at the same time, the first set of artefacts restored to the Sámi Museum by the Finnish National Museum.

During the anniversary year, the Nature Centre of Metsähallitus will arrange Nature Nights on the Lemmen-joki National Park. The Culture Nights of the Sámi Museum will spotlight various themes in the museum field. For children, there will be story hours at the By the Forest exhibition.

Siida’s personnel are happy about the anniversary year and look forward to the moment when Siida will be granted financing for an extension of the house. After funding is in place, Siida will be extended and have, as a result, sufficient facilities for the collections, the restaurant and the customer services of the house. The permanent exhibitions are also being renewed.

The Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida and Restaurant Sarrit want to thank all their partners and friends for the shared years.

We warmly welcome everyone to Siida to celebrate our anniversary year!
