Siida Open Every Day in Summer

May 27, 2011 11:37 AM

The Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida will switch to summer opening hours on June 1. In summer, Siida is open every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. On the same day, the Open-Air Museum of the Sámi Museum and the Skolt Sámi Heritage House in Sevettijärvi will be opened for the public.

Siida will start its summer season on Wednesday, the 1st of June. In summer, Siida is open every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The multimedia show “Aurora Borealis”, which is included in the ticket to the museum, is presented daily at 11 a.m. and 2 and 5 p.m. if the auditorium is not booked for other events. Restaurant Sarrit has the same opening hours as Siida, and it offers a lunch buffet every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In summer, customers can also eat à la carte at the restaurant. Reservations for groups should be made in advance.

On June 1st, we will also open the historical open-air museum which is situated on the premises of Siida. The open-air museum introduces the public to different Sámi ways of living and hunting. On the premises, there are unique attractions such as the original buildings of Tirro Farm that date back to the 1800s. The path that winds through the open-air museum is about 800 metres long. On the path, there are almost 50 items to look at.

The regional unit of the Sámi Museum in Sevettijärvi – The Skolt Sámi Heritage House – will be opened for the public for this summer, too. The Heritage House will be open slightly longer than last year: until September 25. The Skolt Sámi Heritage House tells about the history of the Skolt Sámi living in Sevettijärvi. In the vicinity of the Heritage House, there is also an open-air museum which introduces visitors to the summer quarters of the past Suenjel Skolt Sámi community. In the Heritage House, there is a small museum shop, which sells Skolt Sámi handicrafts and literature. The Skolt Sámi Heritage House is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Heritage House is free for visitors.

The nature huts of Metsähallitus in Lemmenjoki and Utsjoki open their doors in June. The nature huts provide information on the beautiful nature and the conditions of the region, as well as on the possibilities of making excursions in the area. Fishing permits, too, can be bought at the nature huts. Both nature huts have a small exhibition and a multivision show and are free for visitors. The opening hours of the nature huts in the summer of 2011:
Lemmenjoki 13 June – 18 Sept., 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Utsjoki 13 June – 11 Sept., 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., and 12 Sept. – 23 Sept., 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The return transportation by bus from Siida to Ivalo and Saariselkä on Wednesdays is available in summer, too. You can take a regular bus from Saariselkä and Ivalo to Inari. The return transportation by a charter bus leaves from the front of the Siida Building on Wednesdays at 16.15. You will need to sign for the return transportation on the day before at the hotels of Saariselkä, at Saariselkä Central Booking Agency (Saariselän Keskusvaraamo) or at Siida. You can get more information from Siida’s Customer Service.
