Siida participates in the project Art Testers!

Feb 16, 2018 10:19 AM

The Sámi Museum Siida participates in the national Art Testers project as one of the destinations of the province of Lapland. In the autumn of 2018, eighth-graders from all around Lapland will visit Siida and learn more about Sámi art and their own roots.

We at Siida are pleased to be included in the project and see it as an excellent opportunity for young people to acquaint themselves with their roots, family and home region through art and cultural education.

In connection with the Art Testers project, Siida and Mánnu, the Sámi Children’s Cultural Centre, offer young people a look at Sámi art and information on Sámi culture – something that every educated person should have. The young people get an opportunity to experience art themselves and be part of a community. At the same time, they are also given tools that will enable them to reflect on themselves.

Art Testers is a huge national project financed by the Finnish Cultural Foundation. It was launched in 2017, and its goal is to take all the eighth-graders of Finland – altogether almost 200,000 young people – to art insitutions, to experience and evaluate art. We are now halfway through the first school-year of the project, a project which involves all the schools of Finland from Hanko to Utsjoki. The young people are offered two art visits: one in their own province and one in a national destination, mostly situated in Helsinki.

“The destinations the art testers will visit are all run by high-quality art oganisations that are well-known for their good work with their visitors. According to the project, special attention is paid to diversity in selecting the art organisations of the school-year 2018–19.

The project is financed by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland and coordinated by the Association of Finnish Children’s Cultural Centres. The total budget of the project is twenty million euros.
