Skolt Sámi Heritage House open for a longer period this year

Mar 14, 2011 12:00 PM

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House in Sevettijärvi will be open longer this year. The house is held open in the summer. This year, the Heritage House will be opened for the public on June 1, and it will be open daily until September 25.

Sevettijärvi is considered as the core area of the Skolt Sámi of Finland. The village of Sevettijärvi is, among other things, the home of the Skolt Sámi Heritage House – run by the Sámi Museum – which tells, through its exhibition, about Skolt Sámi history and culture. The basic exhibition of the Heritage House is located in the bigger room of the house and in the two exhibition rooms of the outbuilding. By the Heritage House, there is an open-air museum, which introduces the visitors to the summer place of the Suonjel sijd, or Suonikylä Lapp community. The Heritage House also has a small museum shop, which sells local handicraft and literature.

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House is open from June 1 to September 25 daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no entrance fee. If you come with a group, please contact the Heritage House in advance. When the Heritage House is open – from June to September – you can do this by sending an email to kolttaperinnetalo@samimuseum or by phone, +358 (0)400 373015.
