The Lady Day Festival in Hetta begins with the opening of the Raittijärvi – The Village of Kaijukka exhibition at the Fell Lapland Nature Centre on Thursday 23 March 2017 at 6 p.m. The exhibition will be open for the public from 24 March to 30 April 2017. At the opening, a book of photography by Jyrki Kallio-Koski will be published. This 160-page-long work consists of impressive photographs and texts that convey the unique atmosphere of the village Raittijärvi for the reader.

The beautiful photography of Jyrki Kalliokoski tells about life in the Sámi village of Raittijärvi over a span of forty years. The dialogue between humans and nature, recorded in Kallio-Koski’s photos, is genuine and touching. The Sámi village of Raittijärvi has, for years, tempted Kallio-Koski to record the villagers, their everyday lives and how the reindeer-herding way of life is passed from one generation to another. In addition to the Finnish texts, the photography book also has summaries in English and North Sámi.

“The exhibition and the book are a homage to the villagers and their way of life.”
