The summer season of the Sámi Museum Siida’s Open-Air Museum launched on 4 June

May 23, 2018 03:54 PM

The Sámi Museum Siida will have the opening ceremony for the summer season of its Open-Air Museum on Monday, 4 June 2018, from 5 to 7 p.m. At the opening ceremony, we will highlight hot to take care of architectural heritage, because we have done – and continue to do – restoration work in our open-air museum. We will introduce the public to the results of this work and offer ideas for those who are planning restoration or have already begun with it.

In our repair advice on architectural heritage, we will concentrate this time on different types of traditional roofing. The two-room cabin of the Tirro Farmyard in the Open-Air Museum has a roof made from split, concave timber with birch bark underneath, while the three-room cabin has board roofing with grooves in the boards and felt underneath. This spring, we have renewed the storeroom’s birch-bark roof that has grooved boards. The same kind of roofing was used in the original roof of the Utsjoki parsonage that was completed in 1843.

The opening ceremony will be attended by Restorer Marko Korkeasalo, who restored the buildings of the Museum. He will also tell about other types of traditional roofing and their uses, for example, about birch-bark roofs with poles on top. At the opening, you will also have an opportunity to talk with Korkeasalo about your own restoration matters. Anyone who plans or has already begun to repair an old building might want to come and get good tips.

The opening is free for everyone, and the Museum will offer coffee with sweet buns. Participants are asked to meet in Siida’s entrance hall, from which we will walk together to the Open-Air Museum.

You are most welcome to launch the summer season of the Museum with us and discuss the architectural heritage and how to take care of it.
