Presentation: Brown bear population and management in Northern Norway

Advisor Victoria Gonzalez from NIBIO research institute will introduce the brown bear as a species. She will also present how the brown bears are managed with the help of DNA-analyses in Norway.

DNA is the molecule inside cells that contains the genetic information responsible for the development and function of an organism. DNA molecules allow this information to be passed from one generation to the next.

NIBIO is one of the largest research institutes in Norway. They contribute to food security and safety, sustainable resource management, innovation and value creation through research and knowledge production. NIBIO has a high technology DNA laboratory in the village of Svanvik in Norway.

Before the lecture to the public Victoria Gonzalez will run a bear DNA-laboratory workshop for the upper level pupils from Inari and Sevettijärvi schools.

The presentation will be held in English.

Tickets 8€/adults, free entrance for children under 18 years.

Albma olbmot – Real People

The Sámi Museum Siida’s temporary photograph exhibition “Albma olbmot – The Real People” displays Pekka Sammallahti’s black-and-white portraits of people living in the north, showing them in their everyday surroundings. The time span is seven decades, starting from the 1960s. The exhibition focuses on people living on the Teno River and its river system, but there are also portraits from Inari, Enontekiö, Sodankylä, Kaaresuvanto, Gällivare and the Varanger and Alta fjords, etc. The title reflects the rather common custom of indigenous peoples of calling themselves the real people.

The exhibition has been curated by Marja Helander. Helander is a renowned photographic artist, who has also created short films in the past few years. The exhibition has been produced by the Sámi Museum Siida.

The exhibition “Albma olbmot – The Real People” by Pekka Sammallahti is displayed at the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari 23.6.2020–31.3.2021. In the summer season, Siida is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Events

The Sámi Museum and Nature Centre Siida is a central event location in Inari. Every year, we organise events related to Sámi culture and northern nature in various languages. In addition to events we put together independently, we organise events in cooperation with others.
